 Main Presentation Highlights:

Our Chapter is honored to have 4 local award winners for the ASHRAE  Technology Awards.  This reflects the high quality of the engineering in our local chapter and is a significant accomplishment.  This month's chapter meeting is to have each award winner present a short case study on the recognized projects.  The four projects are:

  1. Heat Recovery Chiller Project at Madison College Truax Campus: presented by NAME REMOVED of Pearson Engineering
  2. Chenequa Residence:  Presented by Bruce Senti of Mitsubishi Electric
  3. Jarvis Hall - UW Stout: Presented by Ryan Jester of KJWW
  4. Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery: Presented by Gene Nelson of Affiliated Engineers, Inc.

Project Overview and Presentor Bios:

1. NAMER REMOVED of Pearson Engineering will be presenting on the design and resulting energy savings of a Heat Recovery Chiller project at Madison College Truax Campus. The facility converted to voice-over-IP phone system in 2009, resulting in 12 new data closets. Pearson Engineering designed a 50-ton modular heat recovery system that is now utilized year-round, resulting in 37% annual gas reduction (weather-normalized), with summer gas usage reduced to almost zero therms per month.

2. Bruce Senti of Mitsubishi Electric will be presenting a short case study on the Chenequa Residence. The owners of this home wanted a residence that blended well into the surrounding area.  They also wanted a large residence with minimal impact  on the environment.  The shell of the house had the most efficient glass available along with the best insulation and air sealing practices.  Realizing the importance of the HVAC system in saving energy, they went with geothermal combined with VRF to ultimate in energy efficiency.  As part of the esthetics of the home, they needed to hide the HVAC equipment as much as possible.  This was relatively easy due to the reduced need for ducting and the ability to run refrigerant line set in lieu of long duct runs.  The architect didn’t want any thermostats on the walls so the return air sensor was used to sense room temperature and adjustments were made to the zones via a central controller and an IPad/IPhone app.  Bruce has been involved in energy conservation for over 30 years and involved in the ductless technology since 1998.  He has been working with VRF since its introduction into this country in 2002.

3. Ryan Jester of KJWW will be presenting an overview of Jarvis Hall, UW-Stout.  The original 75,000 square foot Jarvis Hall, built in 1970, was modernized as part of this remodel and addition project.   An existing 11,000 square foot building on the West side of the existing Jarvis Hall was removed and replaced with a new 15,000 square foot tiered classroom addition.  The classroom addition was built above the existing basement mechanical room, which remained in operation throughout the project.  This project also included a 60,000 square foot laboratory addition located to the East of the existing Jarvis Hall.  The laboratory addition included routing all mechanical piping from the existing basement, through the existing, operational Jarvis Hall space, and to new mechanical equipment in the addition.   The completed 150,000 square foot building is comprised of classrooms, offices, and laboratories of various functions for both research and education.  The new addition uses a dual-duct VAV system and an energy recovery chiller to save energy. Ryan Jester has worked as a Mechanical Engineer for KJWW Engineering for the last 6 years.  Ryan’s experience includes HVAC design of University laboratories, residence halls and classroom buildings among many other types of commercial buildings.  In addition to commercial building HVAC design, Ryan has also completed energy modeling and commissioning services for LEED projects.  Ryan graduated from the University of Nebraska with a mechanical engineering degree and completed graduate work at the University of Wisconsin.

4. Gene Nelson of Affiliated Engineers, Inc will be presenting an overview of  Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery. From its earliest conception the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery – comprised of the public Wisconsin Institute for Discovery and the privately funded non-profit Morgridge Institute for Research – was envisioned as a new direction in research facility design. Breakthroughs to be found in the evolving confluences of once-discrete disciplines, the growing imperatives of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, and institutional commitments to public and educational outreach inspired a new kind of organization in a new kind of building, at once sustainable, flexible, and dynamically integrative. 

Honored as R&D magazine’s 2012 Laboratory of the Year, the 300,000 square foot Discovery building is a unique realization of synergistic optimizations. Fostering and supporting flexible, interdisciplinary collaboration within a larger public context defined a non-linear, concentric pod organization of research spaces. This supports sustainable design strategies to reduce energy consumption for HVAC and electricity (and consequent CO2 emissions) by creating thermal buffers and optimizing daylighting through extensive use of glass. Reconfigurable utilities accommodate lab modification, supporting the sustainability-related objective of a 100-year building.

 Sustainability is consistent with the Discovery’s core mission of improving human health. At the same time, the improved efficiencies that are implicit outcomes of sustainable design initiatives reduce operating costs in this notoriously energy-intensive building type. Designed for operation with a 50% reduction of CO2 emission and 50% reduction in water use as compared to recently constructed research laboratory buildings elsewhere on the UW-Madison campus, Discovery has received the USGBC’s LEED® Gold rating.
