Technical Session

EnergyPlus is a well known software for the analysis of building energy with an ability to model complex HVAC system types and strategies. However, the software lacks user friendliness due to the absence of a good Graphical User Interface (GUI). There are several GUIs being developed for Energy Plus by various organizations to encourage the use of EnergyPlus. This seminar summarizes the capabilities of EnergyPlus, provides an introduction to some of the GUIs and discusses the possible approaches, results and workarounds that were implemented in various projects. 

Harshana Thimmanna, AEI sustainable systems analyst and LEED AP, provides energy modeling expertise to the firm's sustainability design services. She has extensive experience in using EnergyPlus software ranging from single room parametric envelope studies to whole building analysis for LEED and has successfully utilized the software on projects such as Case Western Regional University (LEED GOLD), George Washington University (LEED Platinum) and Camden Courthouse, NJ (BIM integration for energy modeling). As part of her work conducting research on the methodologies and calculations used in EnergyPlus, she has modeled complex envelope and HVAC configurations including chilled beams, radiant systems, and natural ventilation and in the process has used multiple GUIs for Energyplus.

Bill Talbert, PE, LEED AP BD+C, leads AEI's building performance modeling team, providing mechanical system design services and performing building energy analyses for a wide range of facilities. He is a member of the ASHRAE 90.1 SSPC Energy Cost Budget Subcommittee. Mr. Talbert has performed sustainable design strategies and whole building energy simulations using a variety of software tools including VisualDOE, Equest, Trace 700, Energyplus, TRNSYS, and BLAST energy analysis software. These studies have examined the effects of high performance envelopes, daylighting controls, building orientation and geometry, thermal energy storage, energy recovery, ground source heat pumps, and various other mechanical system designs on a building’s energy use.

Main Session

Kristan (Kris) G. Kollevoll, President of BRD Noise and Vibration Control, Inc. is a graduate of Princeton University.  Kris started with BRD as a Sales Engineer in 1982 and became Sales Manager and Vice-President in 1988. In 1994, upon the death of Bernard R. Deschaine, founder of the company, Kris became President and added several new Sales Engineers to BRD’s staff.  Additional Regional Offices have been opened in the Midwest, Southwest and Southern States and plans are underway for other offices in the New England and West Coast areas as well. Kris is affiliated with the Acoustical Society of America and Institute of Noise Control Engineering and has also served as an outside consultant for the training of OSHA Citation Officers. Kris has worked extensively to aid such prominent companies as DuPont, Alcoa, Johnson & Johnson, Hewlett Packard, Proctor & Gamble, as well as a long list of HVAC OEMs in designing and manufacturing long-term engineered noise control solutions. Around 1988, Kris formed a separate HVAC Division within BRD to focus on developing proven solutions for recurring noise problems.  BRD is a recognized leader in the field of noise reduction systems for air cooled and liquid chillers and for curb mounted rooftop packaged air conditioning equipment.
